CHILDLINE KZN`S BACKGROUND

In 1985 the Addington hospital launched a Sexual Awareness Abuse Campaign with the help of the Sunday Tribune newspaper. The response from the public was said to be overwhelming and the idea of launching a Childline was born. The aim was to provide a specialized non-sectarian and non-racial help line for children and their families who had undergone any form of abuse. The response from various professionals was also positive and thus the idea was eventually out into practice.

In June 1986, Childline was launched as a telephone Crisis line for children and their families. Professionals such as social workers, teachers, nurses and psychologists gave up their spare time to assist and initially heeded the call or help. By 1990 many of these volunteers needed to take a well-earned break and the need to replenish the complement of voluntary crisis counselors increased.

In 1988 the treatment unit of Childline was initiated when a number of professionals expressed concern at the lack of specialized treatment services for abused children. These concerns were also reflected by the support of the general public for the development of a therapy centre. Childline Kwazulu Natal is a provincial, non-profit, non-governmental organization that provides essential preventative, educative, therapeutic and rehabilitative services to children and their families. It is an independent service, affiliated to Childline South Africa.
